Fred Thompson's Hershey, PA Speech

Fred Thompson gave a speech Friday in Hershey PA and Townhall has the transcript. Maybe he can give John McCain some pointers on what to say to win over conservatives and Americans in general. He began the speech pointing out the principles upon which our nation was founded.
From these principles we developed a market economy, with the rule of law, a system of trade with other nations, and a strong national defense. From the prosperity, freedom and strength that came from this system we became a friend and example to all those around the world who aspired to those same things. We won wars, including the Cold War, and enhanced world stability and a friendlier environment within which others could pursue their own freedom. This of course enhanced our own security as Americans.

But today many of the principles that made our country great are under assault. Some of our fellow Republicans say that things are different now and we must change with the times. We recognize that appropriate change is necessary, just as the conservative thinker Edmund Burke did when he supported the American Revolution.

However we must ask those who would modify our principles, “When did freedom and liberty become outdated?” Then, “What part of our Constitutional framework needs to be abandoned?”

Maybe he was referring to Barack Obama who, in a recent speech said he wants to "re-make this great nation". If it's so great, Barry, why do you feel the need to remake it?

Un-Inspiring

It's Obama vs. McCain. Democrat vs. RINO. Left winger vs. never afraid to embrace left-wingers. We have the two candidates chosen for us by the media.

During Republican primary debates John McCain argued that he is the most conservative candidate. Since he became the presumed nominee, McCain has done whatever he can to appear liberal or moderate. While this may help him pick up some angry Hillary supporters, without the conservative base it is doubtful he can win the election in November.

McCain's choice of running mate could be just what he needs to win in November or it could doom his candidacy. Let's hope he makes a wise decision.

Must Reads of the Day

The Road to Hell is Paved With Democrats by Richard Collins caught my eye just because I like the title. Let's hope the American people can see beyond slick Barry's fancy rhetoric.

Many conservatives have been less than thrilled with McCain's presumed nomination. Thomas Sowell reminds us why it is important to not sit out this election in his piece Obama and McCain. He has a point, McCain may not be the perfect candidate, but look at the alternative.

Why won't Hillary bow out?

The media hasn't been able to contain their elation at the presumptive nomination of Barack Obama. They don't even try to hide it or show any objectivity.

Naturally, Hillary Clinton is not bowing out of the race. Is she waiting for the tape of Michelle Obama's anti-whitey rant to emerge? It's rumored she said the way to solve the problem of black on black crime is to divert it to black on white. That will go over well with the voters. You know if that video is out there someone will find it. The media will try to hide it, but you can't keep that cat in a bag for long.

If the rumors are true and this video surfaces it could totally derail Obama's campaign. How many Americans want an America-hating racist as the First Lady?

What a Surprise-Carter to Endorse Obama

The presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party is picking up an endorsement from the worst president in the history of the United States. Will Jimmy Carter say he hopes Barry will pick up where he left off in his quest to destroy our country? Is he happy to endorse a man who will throw Israel under the bus, the way he threw his grandma, pastor and church under the bus? Will he praise Obama's plans to meet with psychotic tyrants with no pre-conditions? Is he proud to endorse a man whose friends include terrorists and race-baiters? Does he pine for the good old days of gas lines and 7.5% unemployment? Does Jimmy Carter honestly believe that his endorsement is going to convince hard working Americans to vote for Obama?

New York State Tyranny

The State of New York thought they weren't taxing New Yorkers enough so they increased the cigarette tax. The tax went up by $1.50per pack, so the total NYS tax on a pack of smokes will now be $2.75.

One can't help but wonder what the goal is. Anti-smoking groups applaud the new tax, believing it will push people to quit smoking. The legislators say they increased the tax to close the budget gap. If everybody quits smoking they won't be able to balance the budget.

Wasn't there a revolution over this sort of excessive taxation a few hundred years ago?

Sorry Smokers: cigarette prices rise $1.25 today.

The Ice Age Cometh

Not everyone buys into the hysteria about "global warming" or "global climate change". Logically, it just doesn't seem to make sense. Doesn't the sun cause warmth? Earlier this evening I brought my boys out to the pool for the first swim of the season (we've had a cold spring). It was nice and hot when the sun was shining on us. As soon as the sun went down the kids' lips turned blue. Sun up=warm. Sun down=cool. To me, that makes sense.

You can't really talk to people anymore about the sun causing warmth, they've been brain washed by the media and politicians into thinking humanity is causing the climate to change. So I try to keep my thoughts on the subject to myself because I don't know enough about solar cycles and sun spots for an informed debate.

We all know there are plenty of scientists who believe in the theory of global warming, but there are quite a few who don't. Remember the 31,000 who signed a petition against global warming? Why don't the media and the politicians pay them any attention? Why aren't they listening to geo-physicists like Phil Chapman?

Phil Chapman wrote Sorry to ruin your fun but an ice age cometh and tells us:
All those urging action to curb global warming need to take off the blinkers and give some thought to what we should do if we are facing global cooling instead.

It will be difficult for people to face the truth when their reputations, careers, government grants or hopes for social change depend on global warming, but the fate of civilisation may be at stake.

In the famous words of Oliver Cromwell, "I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken."

His article cites historic examples of the times our planet has warmed and cooled in relation to solar activity.

Another arcticle I came across on this subject is The Deniers: Our Spotless Sun by Lawrence Solomon.
In the same way that the Earth shivered when sunspots disappeared, the Earth warmed when sunspot activity became pronounced. The warm period about 1000 years ago known as the Medieval Warm Period — a time of bounty in which grapes grew in England and Greenland was colonized — also was a time of high sunspot activity, called the Medieval Maximum. Since 1900, Earth has experienced what astronomers call “the Modern Maximum” — the 20th century has again been a time of high sunspot activity.
But the 1900s are gone, along with the high temperatures that accompanied them. The last 10 years have seen no increase in temperatures — they reached a plateau and then remained there — and the last year saw a precipitous decline. How much lower and for how long the temperatures will fall, if at all, no one yet knows — the science is far from settled on what drives climate.

These people have actual recorded history to back up their theories. Shouldn't the American people be given the chance to hear their side of this debate? Why do we accept the pronouncement by Al Gore (who is not a scientist) that the science is settled? These scientists' theories and ideas should be on the front page of the newspapers (or at least page A12) so the American people can hear both sides to this debate before our freedom and liberty is eroded even further in the name of "global warming".

Low Info Voters - the new Soccer Moms?

Newsweek has an article called Just How Low Will They Go? With 'elitist' a choice slur, candidates are trying to win over the new 'It' demographic: 'low-info voters.'

The candidates are making appearances on shows like the Ellen DeGeneres Show and Regis and Kelly, hoping to woo voters who don't really follow politics.

For better or worse, it's moments like these that get many people to tune in to the campaign. "I do think people feel badly that they can't tell you more about the economy, foreign policy, Iraq, who their representatives are," says Harvey Levin, executive producer of TMZ.com, a celeb-obsession Web site that is covering the candidates the same way it does movie stars. "They probably wish they could … but it's just so damn boring for them."

So there we have it, our next presidential election will be decided by people who don't know or care what the candidates stand for.
